Is a Japan Rail Pass still worth it?
The JR Pass is a flat-rate ticket that covers most JR trains, including the Shinkansen, for a set number of consecutive days. It is worth buying only when your point-to-point fares would add up to more than the pass — which, after the 2023 price increase, means riding several long-distance legs, not just one.
When the pass wins
- You ride two or more long Shinkansen legs, such as Tokyo–Kyoto and Kyoto–Hiroshima.
- You are on a loop that returns to your starting city within the pass window.
- You want the flexibility to add day trips without buying a new ticket each time.
When tickets win
- You stay in one city, or ride a single return leg (for example Tokyo–Kyoto only).
- You travel on non-JR lines, private railways or buses for most of the trip.
- Your dates do not fit neatly into a 7, 14 or 21-day window.
Always confirm current pass prices and seat rules before you buy — regional passes (JR East, JR West, JR Kyushu) are often better value than the national pass for a single-region trip.
