Why carry a food allergy card in Japan

Restaurant staff in Japan are careful and accommodating, but the language barrier makes allergies genuinely risky. A written card removes guesswork: it states your allergy clearly in Japanese so a chef can read it, and it avoids the ambiguity of a spoken phrase you may not pronounce correctly.

How to use it

  • Print the card (or screenshot it) and show it before you order.
  • Keep a spare copy in your wallet or phone case.
  • For severe allergies, also carry your medication and know the Japanese word for your allergen.

Common allergens in Japanese food

Watch for hidden sources: soy sauce and miso contain soy and often wheat, dashi is made from fish, and many snacks use egg or dairy. Showing the card lets staff check the actual ingredients rather than guessing.

This card is a communication aid, not a medical document. Always confirm ingredients with staff and carry prescribed medication if your allergy is severe.
