What a Japan trip actually costs per day
Japan has a reputation for being expensive, but day-to-day costs are closer to Western Europe than most first-timers expect. The single biggest variable is accommodation, followed by how often you eat at sit-down restaurants versus convenience stores and standing noodle bars.
Rough daily budgets (per person)
- Budget: hostels or capsule hotels, konbini meals, local trains.
- Comfort: business hotels, a mix of casual restaurants and one nice meal most days.
- Luxury: ryokan and upscale hotels, fine dining, taxis and private guides.
What usually sits outside the daily number
International flights, the JR Pass or long-distance rail, and any prepaid experiences are best budgeted separately. Add those on top of the estimate here so you do not double-count transport.
